Public Affairs
The Voice of Business Since 1911
Our Government and Legislative
Affairs Committee is truly unique in that, once a month,
representatives from our Beacon Hill and Capital Hill
delegations can be found openly discussing issues,
strategies and opinions across the table from Chamber
members and local elected leaders. Accordingly, Fall River
area business people have unprecedented access to key
members of the Senate and House of Representatives, and they
enjoy regular and candid communication with important
members of the business and civic community.
In recent
years, this relationship has enabled the Fall River Chamber
to be effective locally and in Boston on important business
matters such as the Southcoast Rail, Ethics Reform and on
opposition to increased taxes on shift businesses. The
Legislative Affairs Committee played a major role in helping
the state’s business community win an important concession,
which gradually lowered the property tax shift factor each
year for the several years. This victory generated
thousands of dollars in savings to all commercial property
owners in the City of Fall River.
An
increasingly important part of the Chamber’s work in
government affairs involves issue and task oriented
initiatives and partnerships. Our Downtown/Waterfront
Initiative, for instance, works with city government to help
implement existing plans and develop new plans where
necessary. We are currently partnered with the City of Fall
River to implement the Fall River Energy Enterprise (FREE)
initiative.
As a
regional leader in government affairs The Chamber educates
the membership on critical Legislative issues. We also
advocate in the best interests of our business members. The
Chamber invites you to join us on one of these
action-oriented advocacy teams.
Please
contact The Chamber for more information about the
Legislative Affairs Committee.
