Community Service Recognition Banquet

About the John S. Brayton, Jr. Community Service Award

Where would we be today but for the selfless service and commitment of community volunteers who help preserve the quality of life that we so often take for granted? This is particularly the case during these challenging economic times where families and individuals continue to struggle. That is why the Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry annually presents the Outstanding Community Service Recognition Awards, which also honors the memory of John S. Brayton, Jr.
The Chamber’s community service awards are a tribute to outstanding individuals who give their time and expertise, go above and beyond their own field of endeavor to contribute to the greater Fall River community, and demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in all they do. The award is also intended to acknowledge individuals who have been an inspiration to the community, both in their profession and in their efforts to make the SouthCoast region a better place to live for us all.
A member of a pioneer family in Fall River, John S. Brayton, Jr. was a leader of exemplary character and integrity. He is equally known for possessing extraordinary vision and determination, having much to do with the transformation from the old to the modern Fall River. Mr. Brayton was far ahead of his time as he championed the strengths of what would later be identified as the “SouthCoast” region.
Today, much of our economic development attention focuses on the revitalization of the Fall River waterfront. It is interesting to note that development of this vital community resource was one of Mr. Brayton’s many calls to action. Conservationist, land steward, outdoors person, John S. Brayton, Jr. was a leadership advocate of fair share and the right and privilege of all to be involved regardless of race, creed, color or financial status.
In memory of John S. Brayton, the Awards Committee of the Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2012 award recipients, which include ten individuals and one organization. The Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry wishes to offer this year’s awardees our sincerest thanks and gratitude. The 2012 recipients of the John S. Brayton, Jr. Memorial Outstanding Community Service Award include Kevin Santos, Paul Medeiros, Frank Wing, Fatima Vieira, Palmira Aguiar, Henry “Hank” Nadeau, David Weed, Jo Anne Sbrega, Jo Anne Farrissey O’Neil and Lance Corporal John J. Van Gyzen IV. The organization to be honored is the Marine Corps League.
Selecting award recipients each year is a challenge. The difficulty is due to the large number of worthy individuals who exemplify the purpose behind the Outstanding Community Service Awards. It is a good problem to have, because without each of these individuals or organizations that they work through, maintaining the quality of life that so many of us enjoy would be impossible. For this we owe them our gratitude.

Respectfully,

Robert A. Mellion, Esq.
